Therapeutic Approach
The Meraki Project is built upon an integrative counseling approach that we call Compassionate Choice Therapy (CCT). We believe that the ability to make positive life choices and develop healthy emotional and behavioral responses largely depends on our capacity to accept what we cannot control and focus solely on what we can. CCT emphasizes understanding and transforming the impact of early childhood experiences on one's beliefs. By facilitating compassionate reflection and prompting forward-facing action, we help our clients to challenge unhelpful beliefs and build a healthier self-concept.
What is CCT?
By integrating mindfulness, acceptance, and compassion, clients are guided to develop self-awareness, manage their emotions through what we refer to as their "Control Filter” (a trained ability to recognize the degree of personal control in any problem and the capacity to apply appropriate concern/effort) and actively take responsibility for their actions, relationships, and personal growth. The therapeutic relationship plays a crucial role in fostering a compassionate and non-judgmental environment, where clients can explore their past, set realistic goals, and navigate their path towards finding meaning and purpose.
Overall, Compassionate Choice Therapy aims to offer a holistic approach to counseling that promotes self-awareness, compassion, and acceptance of past and present circumstances, while encouraging clients to take responsibility for their actions and relationships. By guiding clients to develop a healthy Control Filter, the therapy helps them navigate life's challenges, form stronger connections, and pursue a more meaningful and fulfilling existence.
Our Mission
To improve the lives of Islanders by addressing upstream risk factors and support gaps with innovative and barrier-free mental wellness programs that facilitate personal growth, healing, and transformation.
Meraki was founded in 2024 by Mikey Wasnidge (RPC-C) following his time spent counselling and educating abusive fathers in Nova Scotia. Inspired by the remarkable capacity for growth demonstrated by the men he was working with and motivated by the glaring support gaps he witnessed across the system, he returned home with a vision of establishing a not-for-profit and building a team capable of adequately supporting groups that have traditionally gone overlooked or are unable to afford existing therapy options.
While Meraki is still just in its infancy, it exists at the forefront of integrative mental wellness. We continue to develop our innovative, holistic, and personalized approach to improving the community's well-being, exploring both evidence-based and time-tested strategies. But our commitment extends beyond traditional therapy. As a not-for-profit, Meraki's goal is to continue exploring innovative, compassion-based interventions that address big social problems. We're dedicated to creating transformative experiences and aim to empower the community with tools for a renewed life, affirming our belief that everyone has the potential for a meaningful and fulfilling future.
